PRIVATE LESSONS
Private Lessons are designed around three different skill levels for swimmers interested. Private lessons are for all ages, it's never too late to learn how to swim! If you are interested please feel free to contact the Recreation & Fitness Director. Private lessons do not follow session dates. Please let us know what type of swimmer you or the student might be and/or what swimming experience you might have. Knowing of any fears, traumatic situations around water, disabilities and special needs helps us place you with the right instructor.
-
Beginner: A beginner swimmer is an individual who has little to no introductory skills in swimming. This could also include individuals with fears of the water. A beginner could be described as a level 1 or 2.
-
Intermediate: An individual with some swimming experiences/skills in swimming. This could be someone who has partaken in swim lessons before, whether private or group. An intermediate might be described as a level 3 or 4.
-
Master: An individual looking to improve on strokes already developed. This level is for individuals who already have a skill set of two strokes or more. Level 5.
PRACTICE HELPS!
Practice Helps! There is a thing called too much instruction. Give them time to practice on an off day from swim lessons. The YWCA Elmira has a ton of options on the pool schedule. Let them have fun, they will practice the skills they learned without even knowing it! Encourage lots of conversation around swimming, swimming safety, and what to do if they or someone is in trouble. Opens Swims are also a great way for the family to bond! Try our Family Swim's on Friday nights!
JR. SWIM INSTRUCTOR
We are looking for responsible youth, ages 12-15, to volunteer to assist in teaching swim lessons. Must have taken swim lessons before or have competitive swim experience. This is a great opportunity to gain volunteer hours for high school, college, and to give back to the community. For more information please contact our Recreation & Fitness Supervisor at chrisn@ywcaelmira.org.
SWIM LESSON SCHOLARSHIP FUND
The YWCA Elmira has started a scholarship fund to help pay for swim lessons to low income families. You can help build this fund by taking your bottles and cans to Shulman's on the corner of Washington and Clemens Center in Elmira, NY. Just tell them your bottles and cans are for the YWCA! That’s it. Shulmans is generously donating and extra penny for every can/bottle donated to the YWCA! Your donation will help educate youth in our community to have the skills and knowledge to be safe in and around all aquatic environments including our local rivers, lakes and pools. For more information on how you can help, please email our Recreation & Fitness Supervisor.
