WHO WE ARE

The YWCA has been serving our community for over 125 years. In 1887, a home was established for young women leaving farms to work in industry. Since then, the YW’s programs have grown and evolved to meet community needs.

OUR YOUTH

We are the largest child care provider in Chemung County, offering quality care for pre-school through 6th grade. Our Kids World & Summer Enrichment programs serve over 700 children daily after school and holidays at 17 sites. Our Youth Leading the Way programming offers your middle and high school student after school programs and activities to keep them safe and involved while you work.

“We’d be lost without Kids World. If my 9 year old son didn’t have a safe, fun place to go to after school, I couldn’t keep working. My son loves Kids World, and looks forward to it everyday. Since he started in Sept, his behavior and grades are already better."

YOUR HEALTH

The YWCA’s Women’s Breast Health program has a certified “fitter” in our Pink Boutique who can fit a breast cancer patient properly with a quality prostheses, mastectomy bra and swimwear. They are also happy to fit any woman properly for any bra or swimwear. We provide breast surgery patients with a FREE post-operative camisole. We provide some emergency funding for breast cancer survivors.

“Thank you for the free camisole. It was so thoughtful to recognize a basic need as well as lifting the spirit”.

YOUR WELLNESS

Our Fitness & Recreation program has a gym and health resources for you. We will teach your children how to swim.  We offer affordable and fun community swim times for families and groups.  We help you after you have had surgery or suffer from arthritis with our rehabilitative therapy aqua classes.  You can take an Aqua-Dance, Karate or Silver Foxes class.

OUR CEO

Growing up in Elmira and returning as an adult to raise my family and open my own businesses, I never imagined I would have the opportunity and the pleasure of working for an organization as amazing as the YWCA.

I am proud to be part of a national organization that has been on the forefront of the most critical social movements for more than 150 years - from women's empowerment and civil rights, to affordable housing and pay equity, to violence prevention and health care.

In Elmira the YWCA has been supporting and empowering women and families for over 125 year with quality and affordable child care, women's health services, recreation and fitness classes, and education in a variety of areas.

The last year has been a tough one on the YWCA.  COVID shut our doors to the general public.  With fast reflexes and great leadership from our former CEO, the YWCA not only survived, but was crucial in keeping our community working by continuing to provide quality day care, KidsWorld centers and alternative home-school choices to the families and children of our county.

While the world begins to return to "normal" the YWCA is excited to slowly reopen our facilities to the community with new and improved programming and public offerings.  As we continue to evolve and grow I invite you to participate: whether it be membership, attending events, using our services, donating or just stopping by to see our facility and say hello.

Thanks for your continued support of this amazing organization!
